Distance Learning

Monday, April 13, 2020

Good morning! I hope you had a great holiday. A few things this morning:

We’ve been asked to ONLY use Google Classroom for assignments and posting, so I will not be using this class website anymore.

We have a meeting this morning with staff about some grading changes. I think your parents received an email on Thursday so you might know more than I do at this point.

I’ll upload your assignment for this week TOMORROW rather than today.

Okay that’s it for today. I’ll let you know what I hear in the meeting about grades, later today. I’ll post the info on the Google Classroom Stream.

Thursday, April 9, 2020

Hello friends.

I read this article this morning and wanted to share it with you. Please read it. I am having highs and lows. Today I’m getting things done. Yesterday, I did nothing at all besides walk the dogs. I just want you to know that if you’re having peaks and valleys, it’s normal. And your parents might be dealing with stress and anxiety was well…this article might help you understand the effects.

In school/work news, this is supposed to be a three day weekend. I won’t be posting tomorrow, but if you need anything from me, I’ll be checking email. I hope you get some rest over the weekend. And help your parents.

Wednesday, April 8, 2020

Good morning friends. I hope you’re all hanging in there. Thanks for your replies to my Remind messages today. I hope you all understand that your teachers are in the process of easing up on you regarding assignments. So…

Now that we have moved into the third week of online classes I think a lot has changed since your distance learning survey you completed for me.

If you are feeling stressed out, lost, or overwhelmed please contact me via email.

I want to hear what you have to say.

None of us signed up for this, most of you have NEVER had to do online learning . We teachers know this and we’re trying to find a balance.

Please help me make this experience better for you, and know that I am here for you, if you want to talk about our classes that’s fine, if you want to talk to me about other classes that’s fine, if you need to just talk about life right now, that’s fine.

No more assignments from me this week, other than watch some GOOD movies and get outside (alone) and breathe in the wonderful Spring air (ALONE!!!).

Well, maybe keep a gratitude journal (on your phone, on paper, in your mind). Write down three things you’re grateful for each day. It will help…I PROMISE. Or at least THINK of three things you’re thankful for each day. For today, I was thankful for coffee, having running water to take a shower and for internet so I can reach all of you guys.

I miss you all and I’m here to support each and every one of you.

Monday, April 6, 2020

Good morning. I hope you’re enjoying spending Monday in your pajamas just because you can!

I found this quote online this weekend and I really liked it. I know I have days where I can barely do anything during this new “normal” and I’m sure you do to.

“Nobody’s really flying at the top of their game at the moment. Maybe we’re not going to be as productive. Accept that maybe some things will never get done. Maybe something will get done later. Doing what’s important right now matters most.”

So keeping that in mind, I will continue to give you a very limited number of assignments each week. Today’s assignment (DUE WEDNESDAY AT MIDNIGHT) is to watch this video, and fill out this notetaker.

I’m giving you plenty of time (and it’s a simple assignment) because we all have bad days…or days where we have no ambition. And that’s ok.

Please email me with any questions. And just like you, some days I respond quickly, and some days it takes me longer.

Thursday, April 2, 2020

Good morning! No post yesterday, so I wanted to reach out today.

Please record a short video (about a minute) that answers the question “What’s the best part of a typical day?”

We are to be practicing social distancing to stop the spread of the virus, so we understand the reason behind the new normal, but it’s still difficult. So then, stop and think about what’s been good for you?

Due by midnight Friday in your Google classroom folder.

Tuesday, March 31, 2020

As always, email me with any questions.

Friday, March 27, 2020

Good morning friends! Sorry for getting the page up a little late today, but since I don’t have any new work for you I was not in a rush.

Remember, today you’re supposed to upload your video by midnight into the Google classroom. If you’re unsure what I’m talking about you should go back and read the rest of this weeks posts.

For next week, I’d like to have our mandatory class meetings on Tuesday afternoon. Same schedule as before. And if you can’t make it, let me know NOW please.

Wednesday, March 25, 2020

Hello! Thanks for getting all connected for our new quarter. It was nice to see a few of you at a time on the Zoom drop in meeting! We will use Zoom THURSDAY, but not today (Wednesday).

First up, please watch this video. It’s me, talking about our plan for the quarter.

After watching that, here’s your assignment…we’re dealing with a HUGE change and I’d like you to really THINK about it. So first, please read this article CAREFULLY.

As you’re reading, keep a pen and paper nearby and jot down simple thoughts (no need for complete sentences). After you spend a little time getting your thoughts in order, I’d like you to record your thoughts on video. 1-3 minutes please.

Use your phone or a webcam. You can film in your room, or in your back yard or at your desk, wherever you like. Just MAKE SURE you make it pretty (I don’t want to look up your nose and have the camera pointed at the sky).

Once you’re done and happy, upload it to the Google classroom! It’s due by Friday at midnight!!

And check here daily to see what you’re supposed to be doing.

Tuesday, March 24, 2020

Good morning! I hope you were all able to confirm that you’re ready with:

Google classroom
Remind class
Zoom meeting software

I’ve opened a Zoom meeting space today for us to test software. Please join me! By COPYING AND PASTING this link into your browser:

Or! Open Zoom and join with the meeting ID: 990 863 391

I want to make sure we’re all ready to use the technology, so POPPING IN TO SAY HELLO WILL BE YOUR GRADE TODAY.

P.S. I will be available from 7 am until 2 pm. Then again from 6 pm until 8 pm today.

Monday, March 23, 2020

Hello! I’ve missed you all!

What a weird time…I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy.

Well, the show must go on, but don’t worry. This will be a time to adapt, and as such, we’ll go slowly and it will NOT be like it was during “in person” classes.

FIRST, I’d like you to complete this survey. It will be your first grade of the quarter! IT WILL NOT BE RECORDED UNTIL MONDAY MORNING!!! If you took it Sunday, please RETAKE it Monday or I can not record your grade!

SECOND, I’d like to begin doing a Zoom meeting a few times a week. I like video chat as it lets us feel more connected that just logging on and doing work. So please download the Zoom app to your phone, computer or tablet.

THIRD, make sure you’re connected to your REMIND group. If you HAVE NOT JOINED YET…

Period 1: send 3e2f29f to 81010
Period 2: send f97239 to 81010
Period 3: send 236he to 81010
Period 4: send ekd8af to 81010

FOURTH, CHECK THE GOOGLE CLASSROOM STREAM daily please. That’s how I’ll let you know our plans. And that’s how you can interact with each other for now.

Daily Classwork – Spring 2020

Friday, March 13, 2020

Fourth period students, please review this over the break.

Thursday, March 12, 2020

Good morning. No need to do attendance – just have a seat and I’ll get the movie started.

Wednesday, March 11, 2020

Good morning! Attendance first please.

Then…guess what?

Tuesday, March 10, 2020

Hello! Attendance first please.

Next, open your google drive. In a new window, open the google classroom and download all your work from the entire year. There are EIGHT (see list).

Once you have them all, you need to put them into your google drive.

Monday, March 9, 2020

Good morning. Please do your attendance. Then open Premiere.

  1. Next, go here and choose (and download) two videos.
  2. Put them in a folder on your desktop called “Text Project”

I’ll get started with instructions once we’re all ready to go.

Friday, March 6, 2020

Happy Friday! Do your attendance then remember…coverage projects are due today. Submit them to the google classroom…I made a folder called “Coverage Assignment.”

Thursday, March 5, 2020

Morning! Get your attendance done and make good progress on your coverage project…it’s due tomorrow!

Wednesday, March 4, 2020

Morning! Attendance and let’s get going on the coverage project!

Tuesday, March 3, 2020

Good morning! I’m back! So do your attendance and let’s get to work.

I’m concerned that only a few of you completed last week’s assignment (script and shot list). So please look this over to start. Do NOT download the template, just skim the information.

Monday, March 2, 2020

Good morning! I hope you enjoyed your weekend. First, attendance.

Today, make sure you either check out a camera and a tripod, or, if you plan to use your phone for the coverage assignment, get a tripod. Juan, Edgar, Charlee or Carlos can check out equipment. And remember, you can use the studio if you need to.

Begin filming your coverage assignment. So a master shot, then singles or over the shoulders. You should be using your shot list from your selected video as a template.

The project will be due Thursday, so film ASAP!

Friday, February 28, 2020

Good morning. I’m out sick today, so be on good behavior.

Attendance first, then work on your assignment. Due today:

  1. Script for your selected scene (submit into Google classroom)
  2. Shot list of your selected scene AS IT APPEARS IN THE VIDEO YOU WATCHED (submit into Google classroom).

Thursday, February 27, 2020

Good morning! Attendance first, then make sure you’ve completed these steps:

Step 1: Choose a scene from a movie or tv show you’d like to re-create.

Step 2: Find a video of that scene online and WATCH IT.

Step 3: Find the script and copy/paste your chosen scene into a Google doc. If you can’t find the script, you’ll need to transcribe it (which is a lot of work).

Step 4: While watching your scene, create a shot list in the same Google doc (but on a new page) that lists EACH SHOT. (example: WS – 2 people)

Step 5: Plan YOUR shoot. Decide who will be your actors. Will you have them learn the lines or will you just download the audio from the scene you’ve been watching and match them to different shots of stuffed animals or action figures?

Step 6: FILM IT!

Wednesday, February 26, 2020

Morning! Please do your attendance.

Then, read through this.

After you finish skimming that, I’ll show you a scene you can count shots for so you know how many shots are in a scene.

Next, google the scene you want to film. Rewatch it, and make sure you want to film it.

Finally, find the typed version of your script. You’ll copy and paste it into a new Word document.

Tuesday, February 25, 2020

Start by doing your attendance.

Today you’ll start by watching this.

Next, this video covers “the insert shot.”

Then this one to consider how to arrange your shots.

After, we’ll go over coverage.

Monday, February 24, 2020

Today we’re working on coverage. We’ll start with the 180 degree rule.

So we’re moving forward with either your teacher interview project, or Harriet (2020).

Monday, February 17, 2020

Good morning. Please do your attendance.

You have two choices today. You can either work and finish your project, or IF YOU’RE FINISHED, you can join us in watching Harriet (2020). The studio is a mess, so we’ll be watching it in the classroom.

Friday, February 14, 2020

Happy Friday! Today’s the last day to submit your project. That means that I’ll be busy and you’ll be frustrated waiting for me.

Please take advantage of your neighbors and the TAs and ask them to look at your project before I do. They can also be a good resource for help if you need it.

Check off all the aspects listed on the rubric I made for your. Then, once I approve it, you can submit it into the google classroom.

Thursday, February 13, 2020

Please do your attendance.

Call me over as you finish up your project. I need to see it before you submit it!!

Wednesday, February 12, 2020

Good morning. Please do your attendance.

Today I’ll be at a Skills USA competition.

Please continue your progress on your teacher interview. And as always, be respectful to the sub. Help your neighbors. Check in to see if everyone is okay.

And ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND! I’ll see you all on Monday.

Thursday, January 30, 2020

Good morning. Please do your attendance.

Unfortunately, I’ve been called out of the classroom for training. So:

1. Be respectful of the sub. As we discussed last time, you should behave BETTER with guests than with me. They’re instructed to take names for detention.

2. Continue working on your teacher interview projects. As we have discussed, that means using your time effectively.

Any questions, please email me. I will be able to access email at training, but not immediately.

Wednesday, January 29, 2020

Good morning. Please do your attendance.

Please work on your own today on your teacher interview. You will be graded on this.

I shouldn’t have to say this, but watching sports, or playing games or doing ANYTHING not film related will lower your grade.

Tuesday, January 28, 2020

Good morning. Please do your attendance.

Make sure you have turned in those half sheets of paper from last week with your chosen teacher’s signature. Make sure your name is on it.

Please click here. There are two videos you need to watch.

Monday, January 27, 2020

Good morning. Please do your attendance.

Next, with your neighbor, make a list of 4 tips you learned last week about b roll. We’ll discuss it once I get attendance entered.

We’re not at music videos yet, but I’d like you to watch these videos with a critical eye. AT REGULAR SPEED. WITH HEADPHONES.

First, open a Google doc and name it “YOUR NAME Video Breakdown.”

Once you have it open, right click on these so they open in a separate WINDOW. Type the name of the video, then list FIVE aspects per video that you notice. Think: editing (fast? slow?), lighting (natural? colored lights?), production value (fancy studio? live concert? alleyway?), camera (fish-eye? wide shots? weird camera mount?), color (filters? black and white?).

 Silversun Pickups

White Stripes

The Black Keys

Thursday, January 23, 2020

Hello! Please do your attendance.

For the first 15 minutes of class, please work QUIETLY with a neighbor partner and come up with a list of TEN GOOD QUESTIONS you want to ask your teacher when you interview them.

As you work, please type them into the document you began yesterday.

We’ll then discuss each person’s list. As we do so, you’ll add on to YOUR list.

Wednesday, January 22, 2020

Tuesday, January 21, 2020

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, make sure you do your attendance.

I’m unable to be with you today, but that shouldn’t be a problem, since only 3 of you turned in your paper that was due on Sunday. So you will work on it (AND FINISH IT) today in class. Please make sure you adhere to the guidelines. Ask a neighbor to use their rubric if you can’t find yours.

Oh! And there was some confusion about the font – it should be ARIAL!

If you ARE finished with your paper (and submitted it to the Google classroom) please use your free time wisely.

See you tomorrow!!

Good morning. Please do your attendance.

Three things.

First, news on your commercial from the district. Per the SUSD board policy, your commercials (and projects) must be rated G for general audiences. Not awesome, but you will have to get creative to make it entertaining!

Second, you need to TIME your script and write the times at the end of each sentence/paragraph/block of text.

Third, ask your neighbor to read your script. Would they buy your product? Or would the commercial at least generate some interest? If not, you need to revise it. Revision is the key in writing scripts. The first attempt is never adequate.

Tuesday, November 6

Good morning. Please do your attendance.

Today you’ll be scripting your commercial. Download this template and use it to write your script.

Monday, November 4, 2019

Wednesday, October 23, 2019

Short class today, so please do NOT waste time…you ALL need to film your movie reviews TODAY.

If you’re waiting to film, you should find the clips you’re going to include in your review and download them using the website: Y2MATE.com

Please remember: you want the video you film to be the first video you place in the timeline.

I checked the Google classrooms for your movie review questions last night. Please go back and make sure you submitted your questions into the folder called “Movie Review Questions.” Each of you should turn in a paper.

Your script is due today…it goes in the folder called “Movie Review Script.” This is where your document will have two names (if there are two of you working together). Make sense?
